… a notorious food label reader (a.k.a. Registered Holistic Nutritionist), sucker for nature walks, one heck of a cook, Food Revolution Ambassador working with Jamie Oliver and… a hockey mom (a fairly recent addition).
Let me tell you a short story first…
Between working as a holistic practitioner, studying nutrition and raising two kids, I was living a pretty normal life (well, if life with kids is ever “normal”…)
But then came the day my older offspring caught this bug…
Trust me, we’ve tried everything:
- the denial path (“I am sure it's just temporary")…
– searched far and wide for answer to the ultimate “why us?” question …
– asked specialist after specialist…
but eventually we had to face the cold reality…
(and I mean like ice rink cold... and change room stinky)
THERE IS NO CURE FOR HOCKEY.
(nor is there cure for the gear smell that renders your car unsellable)
So few awkward moments after that fact had sunk in, I had no choice but to turn my life upside down once again and to get used to the family's schedule being determined by the next tournament, game or practice and get ready to embrace a tradition as old as hockey: getting intimately familiar with drive-thru menus.
But here’s where I drew a line, having been on the health journey long enough to know better for myself and for my family.
There are couple of things I would like you to know about this hockey player: born prematurely he had been struggling with all kinds of infections since day one. At the age of 2 he was diagnosed with asthma and in grade 4 we had to face a diagnosis of an ADD.
But you wouldn't have guessed all those things if you were to meet him today.
And as much as I would like to tell you we found a miracle therapy for him to get rid of his health challenges overnight, the thing is – it wasn’t quite like that...
It was the discovery of how much of an impact eating a healthy, wholesome diet had on all of us.
EACH. AND. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
And that meant a complete overhaul of my attitude towards what "healthy meals" really meant, a lot of trial and error and finally a holistic nutrition school to put all the pieces together.
And thanks to all of that, this hockey player was able to jump through all the levels of house league in his FIRST season scoring top-shelf goals on ice and top marks in school.
So here we are today…
And as I Can Still clearly remember momentS, when I would have done anything for someone just to tell me how…
… to stop sleepless nights of fevers and colds
… end the food struggle at the dinner table and stop giving into convenience of fast food
… not to stress over each meal, especially when I had no time or desire to cook
… to make eating healthy a priority when I was so busy with everything else and frankly... so freaking tired
… to stop feeling like a failure each time I had to take a call from school inviting me for a private audience with the principal… again...
I am now equipped with first hand experience on both how hard it is to feed the kids the "right stuff" and how to actually make them eat healthier.
You see, I created this website mainly because:
- Once I've joined the hockey religion (yeap, this is Canada, after all), I quickly realized how many parents struggle with exactly the same issue trying to figure out quick, healthy meals on the go to feeds the kids the food that actually helps their bodies and minds develop and stay healthy.
- After much research and trial I finally cracked the code to nourishing kids. I learned how to feed my family wholesome meals on-the-fly to support them in school and on ice, even if I was pressed for time or had no desire to be in the kitchen. And now I can teach you how to do it as well!
It is now my specialty to whiz up quick and easy meals that make my kids ask for seconds while I am laughing (using my inside laugh, of course 😉 ) because I've sneaked in a whole zamboni load of veggies. But it is also my mission to show other busy parents how to feed their kids healthy without losing sanity. And since my recipes are so EASY to make not only ANYBODY can prepare them but they are also wallet-friendly! (You have to admit, drive-thrus are not cheap.)
