Can you believe it is already September? Me neither.
I swear it was only yesterday I was sheltering my new seedlings from unexpected frosty nights and now it is almost that time again! Gosh, where did the time go?
It is even more amazing that my garden shows no signs of slowing down with overproduction going on everywhere I look.
Rewind 4 months back. Do you remember this?
So all and all, it looks like the plan is working!
So how’s it been?
I have to say, generally I surprised myself. Yes, the idea was to grow some food, but I never imagined starting this project that I will be able to cut down on my grocery bill so much. Week after week I practically eliminated entire grocery section at the supermarket. Of course it would be delusional to think that a patch of land this size can give complete independence, but a 60% reduction on my weekly bill is a benefit I take any time! It would be even more if we were to turn vegans all of a sudden, but as with everything else in life, moderation is the key.
Surviving unexpectedly cold spring was not so bad. Some plants apparently love it this way. Summer brought about abundance in each and every corner of the garden and thanks to smart watering I did not have to worry about soaking plants every day. Luckily it wasn’t the hottest summer on records either, which I really appreciated! We had just about enough sunshine to keep tomatoes happy and enough rain to keep everything else vibrantly green.
I even managed to grow few giant sunflowers (literally, 10 feet tall!!) to the amusement of my neighbours and…squirrels.
My hard working cold frame, which I built back in March has been producing salad crops all through the season to upgrade later on to broccoli, radishes and now peppers and herbs.
Cannot wait for winter to test it out even more!
